Hawthorn extract is made from the tiny red berries that grow on the Hawthorne shrub (Crataegus monogyna). Hawthorne berries well as the leaves and flowers have been used in traditional medical systems since ancient times. Both of them are rich in phytonutrients (antioxidants), called oligomeric proanthocyanidins and flavonoids, which are believed to be responsible for its pharmacological effects.
