Magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) bark is a traditional Chinese medicine (where it is known in TCM as houpu or hou pu) used since 100 A.D.
Magnolia bark is rich in two compounds (magnolol and honokiol). Magnolol and honokiol have been studied extensively in recent years for their anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant benefits.
Scientists have discovered that the honokiol in the bark of magnolia bark has the effect of phytoestrogens and may affect the function of hormones in the same way as estrogen. Another compound called magnolol in magnolia bark is classified as lignans, which is a plant-based nutrient rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, which not only helps digestion, but also improves heart blood vessel health.
According to research shows that magnolol and honokiol have weak activity against HIV-1 in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
